Mysterious Lands

Beyond the Eastern Sea lie three lands the main map has not yet drawn. They stay behind the mist until our country has harbours, a navy and the strength to go: each run opens them on its own, and once open they never close. When one opens, you choose trade, diplomacy or war. This page gives hints, never exact figures.

In history: In 1001 Butuan, a chief center in northern Mindanao, sent an envoy to pay tribute to the Song court; its merchant ships also traded with Champa. Lữ Tống is the Chinese name for the island of Luzon, where small polities such as Tondo and Ma-i traded with the Chinese and the Vietnamese before the Spanish arrived (1565–1571).

In history: In 1149 the Lý court founded the Vân Đồn estate as a port for trade with foreign merchant ships. According to the genealogy of the Lý clan of Hwasan (Korea), Prince Lý Long Tường (Lý Dương Côn), after the Lý lost the throne (1226), crossed the sea to Goryeo and was allowed to stay by that country's king; his descendants still honor him as their founding ancestor.

In history: In the early 17th century Japanese red-seal ships called at Hội An, where the Japanese built a whole quarter of their own with a tiled-roof bridge (the Japanese Covered Bridge, Chùa Cầu). The Nguyễn lords and the shogunate exchanged letters until Japan closed its doors (1635).

When the mist clears

  • Once a land can be opened, its sea gate at the edge of the map stops being dimmed. Click the gate to see the hint and how many conditions are already met.
  • Each land has three ways of dealing with it: Trade adds income to the treasury, Diplomacy slowly raises one of your home indicators, War opens the sea route, but your troops must cross by themselves from the right departure port. Once chosen, you must hold it for quite a while before you can change.
  • Distant land means low morale and costly upkeep. Once you declare war, it is hard to go back to talking trade.
  • Some endings are only for the master of the seas. Do you want to be a sea power by the sword, or by merchant ships?
